The Moore/Goldsmith Residence was originally constructed for a forward-thinking Family in 1950 by mid-century modernist Harold B Zook. Unfortunately, the home was renovated and expanded in the 1990s, introducing clashing circular geometry and a palette of ill-fitting finishes and casework. Our work began with a subtractive approach. We surgically removed the circular volumes and ceiling complexity, brought the project back to it’s original grid and opened it up to the sweeping views with new glazing. The finish carpentry and millwork are a study in quiet detailing. The design challenge was consistently “how can we do this with fewer moves, fewer materials?”. We explored the potential of some of our favorite mediums through the interior remodel: custom poured in place terrazzo, hand-made tile, and beautiful slabs on stone chosen for their intentional surface variation.
